Cataract Trailhead offers an exhilarating hiking experience with its challenging yet manageable terrain. The trail is not overly difficult, but its steep incline and substantial elevation gain provide a good workout for hikers seeking a moderate challenge. The descent, particularly over rocky sections, can be precarious, making hiking sticks a valuable companion for stability.
Waterproof shoes are advisable due to the trail's muddy conditions, enhancing the overall trekking experience. The trail is adorned with numerous waterfalls, creating a picturesque and serene atmosphere that nature enthusiasts will appreciate. Starting from the top at Mt. Tamalpais Watershed, the journey unfolds into a waterfall haven, showcasing the beauty of cascading water as you progress down the path.
One consideration for visitors is the limited street parking, making it essential to arrive early, as the area tends to fill up quickly. The trail is not a loop but rather an out-and-back adventure, providing the opportunity to retrace your steps and admire the breathtaking scenery in reverse. Covering approximately 4-5 miles from the starting point to the bridge, Cataract Trailhead is a delightful excursion for those who relish the charm of waterfalls and the challenge of a steep yet rewarding trail. Overall, it's a captivating journey through nature that deserves to be experienced firsthand.
At the start of this trail there is a very nice mirror lake and this is the best part of the hike. There are two ports potties near the start. Trail it self is moderate to strenuous with lots of stair steps many made of stone and quite a few nicely made steps. There is almost no water in Jul. I would think there will be more water in the months up to May.
Experience the beauty of Cataract Trail as it leads you along the breathtaking Alpine Dam. Prepare for an adventurous hike ahead; the trail is steep, rugged, and truly rewarding. Always stay on designated paths to preserve the natural surroundings.
Ensuring your comfort and safety, wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots to protect your ankles, and consider bringing hiking sticks for support on the ascent and descent. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water and a delightful picnic to enjoy by the enchanting waterfall.
While you’ll be tempted, swimming and wading at Cataract Falls are not permitted to maintain the area’s pristine condition. Instead, capture the magic with your camera and cherish the memories forever.
Embrace the journey, take in the breathtaking sights, and above all, have an unforgettable time at Cataract Falls Trail!
Nice short trail, simple and well maintained. Clear moderate hike, can be steep at times. Parking at trail head is limited and pretty much road side parking.
If you are doing this trail, say hello to humidity! The trail was shaded overall, not too much exposed part. It's a fun trail if you would like to gain some much needed elevation. The fall itself wasn't great. I won't suggest doing this trail on a rainy day.
Nice trail to multiple falls. Very scenic, peaceful, quiet hike. Minimal parking at trailhead.
Gorgeous hike nestled in the trees that take you to a beautiful collection of waterfalls. I started my hike from the rock spring trailhead south and then headed up to cataract falls from there! Took around 2 hours and it was a fairly easy hike until you get closer to the waterfall when it gets steeper. I love how the trail follows and weaves through a river. There are also so many cool mushrooms from all the moisture :)
Great hike for new comers or anyone who wants to get in a beautiful view of the falls and a great workout in. Drive is always wonderful to get here and the environment is lush and brimming with life! Definitely add this to your hiking list if you haven’t already.
